Sea Turtle Migration Tour

One week tour option.

Sea TurtleAfter a number of years showing people the monarch butterfly sanctuaries, other species migrations in Mexico inevitably peaked our interest.  Three species of turtles migrate to the coasts of the states of Colima and Michoacan each year.  Our initial exploration of the area told us that this was definitely something our guests would really appreciate.  Come with us as we explore the virgin coast line and assist local turtle protection organizations see new born turtles safely out to sea.

This trip promises to be unforgettable – a perfect soft adventure for families.

DAY 1

Arrive at the airport in Guadalajara, Mexico. Your Rocamar Tour guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to Colima, “the City of Palms.”  Overnight in Colima.

DAY 2

Colima's active volcanoFollowing a leisurely breakfast in the elegant dining room of our hotel we will set out to visit the remains of an ancient civilization at El Chanel. Later this morning we will marvel at the power of Mother Nature as we approach Colima’s ever active volcano, Volcan de Fuego. We will enjoy lunch in the countryside before returning to Colima for some free time to enjoy this colonial jewel.

Overnight in Colima.

DAY 3

Mexico's Pacific CoastThis morning we will head for the Pacific coast to the ecological center in Cuyutlan. Here we will be educated about the breeding, egging and releasing of sea turtles. A box lunch will be provided by Rocamar Tours. A boat tour of the inland waterways will finish our visit to the center. Later in the afternoon we will have free time to enjoy the beach and pool at our hotel.

DAY 4

A bucket of turtles ready for releaseToday we will move further up the Pacific coast into the state of Michoacan. We will stop at Michoacan’s most prolific turtle reserve where upwards of 250,000 sea turtles are born each year.

After relaxing at the beach for the afternoon, we will return to the turtle reserve at night to observe the incredible sight of huge sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs.

Overnight in El Faro.

DAY 5

El Faro BeachWe will enjoy a casual breakfast beside the beach. This morning we will hire boats to take us to an out island to do some snorkeling. Snorkeling equipment will be provided by Rocamar Tours. This is a fun, safe, opportunity to look into the tranquil underwater world of colorful tropical fish, rock formations , unusual plants and coral.

As an alternate, you may choose to explore the island or sit on the beach watching the pelicans as the island is a pelican reserve at this time of the year.

A sea turtle on the beachWe encourage you to have a siesta this afternoon as we will be working tonight. At 9:00 pm we will drive to a third turtle reserve where we will be assisting with the logging of information, watching sea turtles lay their eggs, relocating eggs and releasing new born turtles back into the ocean.

This is a very long night!

We will return to the hotel in the early hours of the morning.

DAY 6

Everyone can sleep in this morning. After spending a few more hours at the beach we will begin our trip back to Colima.

DAY 7

TlaquepaqueNone of the treasure hunters will want to sleep in this morning!! After breakfast we will leave Colima and head for Tlaquepaque. Tlaquepaque offers the best shopping to be found in Mexico. Artisan pieces, clothing, home décor, typical Mexican spices, candy and handicrafts abound in this world renown centre. Anticipating that you will not have any cash left after an afternoon of shopping, Rocamar Tours will pick up the tab for a farewell dinner.

Overnight in Tlaquepaque.

DAY 8

Following a buffet breakfast in the beautiful courtyard of our hotel, your Rocamar guide will transfer you to the airport in Guadalajara.
